Unfortunately, the restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have led to the cancellation of the fair's dates for the second year in a row. Instead the Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2021 dates - 14 to 17 June - and the accompanying Bologna Licensing Trade Fair and BolognaBookPlus events will be held in a digital-only format.
Every year publishers, authors, illustrators, designers and agents gather at the Bologna Fiera to form partnerships and shape the future of the business. With children remaining the largest reader group, BCBF is a must-attend for everyone in the industry. From marketing strategies, through illustration techniques and digital technologies, to the latest content trends, the programme of the fair includes meetings and discussions on all topics of interest.
Supporting events that seek to drive the sector’s future at BCBF include the Flagship Conferences, where renowned industry figures and insiders discuss major issues and the hottest topics. The “BCBF visual identity workshop”, which has been part of the fair for its past few editions, is an excellent opportunity for growth and professional advancement, with its selection of a newcomer artist to design the BCBF's visual identity for the following year.

The Bologna Children's Book Fair 2021 dates have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fair will now take place on 14 - 17 June 2021.

BCBF 2021 will feature an exiting new area which will be focused on cartoons, comics and graphic novels for children. This medium is set for a strong year, with the new Comics Corner at the expo and the BolognaRagazzi Award adding a permanent Comics category to its list. During Bologna Children's Book Fair 2021 the category will recognise works in these three sections: Early Reader, Middle Grade and Young Adult.
The organisers also revealed the Guest of Honour for the upcoming Bologna Children's Book Fair - Sharjah. Regarded as UAE's cultural capital, Sharjah will bring to Bologna well established illustrators and authors. Its participation will be accompanied by special events both in Bologna Fiera and in the city. The programme will feature workshops, matchmaking sessions between Emirati and Italian artists and publishers, plus seminars centred around the production of illustrated books.
